| History: | The history of this breed goes
back to Roman times, and it is thought that the invading Roman troops first
brought shorthaired cats to Britain. Written records for the British Shorthair
only go back to the turn of the century, although it is clear from old paintings
and engravings that they had been around for several hundred years before
this.
Shorthairs were probably originally kept for their mousing ability and for the fact that, unlike the Persians and Angoras, also seen at this time, they did not need human help with their grooming. They were a self-sufficient variety, which provided a useful service to man - it is recorded that most ships setting sail for the New World included several cats on the cargo list.

| Characteristics: | British Shorthairs can grow
to be some of the largest domestic cats, but their gentle and shy dispositions
have caused them to be described as the "gentle giants". They are loving
and affectionate, have quiet voices and are very loyal and companionable.
Generally, they do not seem to have the wanderlust of the foreign breeds,
and are happy to lounge around indoors.
British Shorthairs should be large, strong, sturdy and muscular. The overall look for the British is for a chunky, cobby cat, without the extreme facial expression of the Persian. They are extremely easy to care for, only needing to be groomed about once a week to remove loose hairs, although I have never had a British yet who would object to being groomed every day!
